Linking the Black Sea to the Sea of Marmara and separating Europe from Asia, the Bosphorus is the best way to understand Istanbul. Gliding past palaces, waterside mansions and fortresses on the deck of a ferry, or walking along the shore from Bebek to Rumeli Hisarı, the city looks completely different. In this guide you will find the Bosphorus tour options, the best waterfront walks and how to reach the city by VIP transfer from Istanbul Airport or Sabiha Gökçen.

Bosphorus tour options

Most Bosphorus tours leave from Eminönü. The choice depends on how much time you have.

  • Short tour (about 2 hours): From Eminönü up to around Rumeli Hisarı or the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge and back; ideal if your time is limited.
  • Long Bosphorus tour (full day): The Şehir Hatları ferry sails all the way to Anadolu Kavağı at the Black Sea mouth of the strait; stop there for a few hours, have fish and walk up to Yoros Castle.
  • Private boat: For a sunset trip or a tour away from the crowds you can hire a private boat and set the route and length yourself.

What you see from the boat

Heading north, the European shore is on your left and the Asian shore on your right. Dolmabahçe Palace, Ortaköy Mosque, Rumeli Hisarı and Beylerbeyi Palace look their best from the water, with wooden mansions, fishing villages and woods in between.

Rumeli Hisarı was built in just a few months in 1452, shortly before the conquest of Istanbul. With its walls and towers it commands one of the narrowest points of the Bosphorus and is impressive both from the boat and from the shore.

The Bebek–Rumeli Hisarı waterfront walk

To round off the boat tour with a walk, the shore path from Arnavutköy to Bebek and on to Rumeli Hisarı is ideal. On the flat, easy path you pass waterside mansions, stop for coffee in Bebek and watch the Bosphorus at the foot of the fortress.

When to take a Bosphorus tour

Ferries run all year, but the Bosphorus is most pleasant in spring and autumn. On windy days it can be cool on deck; bring a light jacket.

  • Spring (April–May): Judas trees paint both shores pink.
  • Summer (June–August): Long days and sunset tours; ferries are at their busiest.
  • Autumn (September–November): Quieter ferries, clear air and soft light; ideal for walking too.
  • Winter (December–March): Seagulls, misty mornings and calm tours with a hot glass of tea.

On tours towards sunset the skyline turns golden. On weekends and holidays the ferries can be very crowded.

Tips for a Bosphorus tour

  • Choose your side. Going north, the left side (European shore) offers more palaces and fortresses.
  • Arrive early. Be at the pier before departure to get a good seat.
  • Dress in layers. It can be windy on deck; a light jacket helps even on summer evenings.
  • Watch for wet floors. Decks and piers can be slippery; wear comfortable shoes.
  • Fish sandwich in Eminönü. Before or after the tour, take a break in the historic bazaars around the pier.
  • Use an Istanbulkart. It works on city ferries and public transport.

Ferry times, routes and fares change with the season; check the current Şehir Hatları timetable before you go.
